Japanese actor Asano Tadanobu has talked about his joyful reaction after winning an award at the 2025 Golden Globes for his role in the historical TV series "Shogun," depicting a power struggle in feudal Japan.
"Shogun" took Best Television Series - Drama and three other awards, including Asano's for the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a supporting role in a TV drama series.
Asano showed up in front of reporters in Tokyo on Monday, holding the trophy he won. He said: "I'm just so happy. As you may have seen, I'd never been so excited before, and I'm still overjoyed."
He went on to say, "I was moved when my name was called, as Harrison Ford and other globally famous actors were among my fellow nominees."
He continued, "I was thinking about what to say in the speech, but my mind went blank, so I spoke off the cuff, and it went well."
Asked why the historical drama set in Japan was so well received overseas, Asano said: "Many people started watching video streaming services during the coronavirus pandemic. We were able to release the work at exactly the right time, when people began trying to watch productions with subtitles."
Dialogue in the 10-episode drama is mostly in Japanese, which is unusual for a US production.
Explaining what winning the award meant to him, Asano said, "It made me convinced that it's OK for me to continue acting the way I want and keep the acting style I've believed in."
"Shogun" was produced by US pay TV channel FX. Set during Japan's Sengoku Warring States period, it features a samurai warrior and a British navigator who became his subordinate.
