Ukraine: Russian attacks kill 11 following West's pledges to provide tanks NHK

Ukraine's government says that Russia on Thursday conducted deadly attacks after Western nations vowed to provide battle tanks to the country.

The government said Russian forces mounted missile and drone attacks on the capital Kyiv, Odesa in the south and elsewhere, leaving 11 people dead.

Ukraine's state-run power company said power-related infrastructure in several locations were damaged and that electricity supplies in the south were affected.

On Thursday, Canada announced it will supply Ukraine with four of its German-made Leopard 2 tanks. The move came one day after Germany and the United States promised to send tanks to the country.

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, said in a statement on Thursday that experts stationed at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in southern Ukraine reported the occurrence of powerful explosions around the facility.

Concerns about the safety of the nuclear facility are rising as fighting intensifies in the area. Grossi stressed the importance of creating a safety zone around the site as soon as possible.
