An explosion inside a coal mine in northern Turkey has left at least 25 people dead.

The blast occurred on Friday at a mine in the northern town of Amasra.

Local authorities say 25 people have been confirmed dead and 11 others are being treated in hospital.

Footage on local media shows people huddled around the entrance to the mine and rescued workers being rushed on stretchers to ambulances.

Turkey's Interior Minister, Suleyman Soylu, visited the mine and said there were 110 workers inside at the time of the blast. He said some are still trapped inside and rescue operations are underway.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he will travel to the mine to inspect the situation on Saturday. He vowed government-wide efforts to identify the cause of the incident.

In 2014, an explosion at a coal mine in the western town of Soma killed 301 people. The disaster sparked protests across the nation against Erdogan's government.
