Dhaka building blaze death toll rises NHK

A massive fire ripped through a building in a busy commercial district of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The blaze has killed at least 46 and injured dozens, the health authority confirmed.

The fire broke out around 10 p.m. late on Thursday.
The seven-floor retail complex, which houses mostly restaurants, was crowded with diners and shoppers at the time.

Local media reports that the fire originated on the ground floor and quickly engulfed the building.
Firefighters rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire and carry out rescue operations. They were able to get the flames under control in about two hours.

A survivor says he escaped to the roof and that around 30 people sheltered there. After the blaze was under control, firefighters broke into a side of the roof to rescue them.

The health authority says 46 people died due to inhalation of carbon monoxide. Some of the injured being treated at a burn center are not out of danger.

An investigation body has been launched to pinpoint the cause of the fire.
