Vendors from an iconic morning market in the quake-stricken city of Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, have opened for their first business of 2025. About 10 stores began their first operations this year on Thursday at a temporary market of a commercial facility in the city. Many of the stores that used to be in the morning market street suffered damage due to a massive earthquake and fire on January 1, 2024. Families and other shoppers visited the makeshift stores under orange tents selling Wajima-nuri lacquerware chopsticks, seafood and other items, and enjoyed chatting with store owners. A volunteer from a high school in Nagoya City said it was wonderful to see the vendors being committed to protecting the culture of the morning market. A seafood vendor in her 60s said she was feeling fearful about the new year. But she said, blessed with a sunny morning, she was able to greet New Year's Day calmly. She also said she wants more people to savor the good seafood tastes of Wajima this year once local ports and fisheries recover.
