Weak yen attracting more overseas customers to Japanese e-commerce sites NHK

The company says its service, called Buyee, is attracting an increasing number of users from the United States, ASEAN countries and elsewhere.

The company says Buyee sales are up about 80 percent from two years ago. In addition to figure dolls, luxury items, such wristwatches, designer bags, cameras and whiskies, are selling well.

Some users who placed goods for sale on Buyee posted messages about the service on social media. They said, "Buyee really makes us feel the benefit of the weak yen," and "Thanks to the weak yen, things are selling one after another."

Beenos President Naoi Shota says the company's service has helped create a new style of consumption that is different from the previously-seen shopping spree among tourists to Japan.

He also says that as Japan's declining birthrate shrinks the domestic market, the country should shift focus to the global market, adding that the weak yen will certainly be a push in that direction.
