The Japanese government has decided to let the private sector manage and operate the National Stadium, which was the centerpiece of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
                
The Japan Sports Agency on Wednesday released a new basic plan for the facility&#039;s future use.
                
Under the plan, it will invite potential candidates to apply in fiscal 2023 to operate and manage the stadium. The selected entity will begin doing so in fiscal 2024.
                
The facility has been operating in the red. The government is forecast to spend about 1.3 billion yen, or about 9.7 million dollars, to cover the deficit this fiscal year.
                
The government will continue subsidizing costs up to 1 billion yen a year. It will also carry on paying about 1.1 billion yen annually in land lease fees to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and others.
                
The Sports Agency said the conditions are aimed at lowering the threshold for candidates to apply.
                
The latest plan officially leaves the stadium&#039;s track intact, in part because the facility will host the 2025 World Athletics Championships. Advocates for using the stadium as a concert venue also backed the idea.
