The US Securities and Exchange Commission has launched a task force to overhaul crypto regulation. The move appears to align with President Donald Trump's pledge to support the industry.
The agency said on Tuesday that the group's aim will be protecting investors while supporting innovation. It said the task force will set the SEC on a sensible regulatory path that respects the law.
The commission noted that it had relied primarily on enforcement actions to regulate crypto. It acknowledged that this led to "confusion about what is legal." It added that this creates "an environment hostile to innovation and conducive to fraud." The SEC says it can do better.
The government body says the task force will seek input from investors, industry participants and experts.
It will also coordinate with regulatory authorities at home and abroad.
The move marks a shift from the Biden administration's policies that leaned toward strictly regulating businesses involved with the assets.
