French President Emmanuel Macron has again stressed that Europe should not get caught up in the escalating US-China rivalry over Taiwan, saying being a US ally does not mean being a vassal. Macron recently made a controversial comment on Taiwan after his visit to China. He told French media, "The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and adapt to the American rhythm or a Chinese overreaction." Asked to clarify his remark in a news conference on Wednesday, Macron said France's position on Taiwan has not changed. He said the French and European positions on Taiwan are the same and they support an open Indo-Pacific region and the status quo in Taiwan. He said France supports the one-China policy and the pursuit of a peaceful settlement of the issue. In an apparent reference to the US, Macron said this position is compatible with the role of an ally, but being an ally does not mean being a vassal. Some observers are voicing concerns that Macron's comments could affect unity among the Group of Seven nations ahead of a leaders summit in Japan next month.
