Tokyo police arrest Japanese fraud suspects extradited from Cambodia NHK

Tokyo police have arrested 19 Japanese nationals on suspicion of running phone scams from Cambodia targeting people in their home country.

Police made the arrests aboard a chartered plane that was transporting the suspects from Cambodia. The aircraft arrived at Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Tuesday night.

Sources close to the investigation say the suspects range in age from 25 to 55.

The sources say the group allegedly swindled about 250,000 yen, or about 1,900 dollars, in electronic money from a Tokyo resident in her 60s in January.

The alleged scammers are suspected to have sent a fake text message warning the woman she was behind on a payment for an online service.

The group is believed to have operated from a hotel room in the southern Cambodian city of Sihanoukville.
