The Japanese government has officially unveiled its bid for a contract to jointly develop and build new frigates for Australia.
                
The government made the announcement after Canberra shortlisted Japan and Germany for the program earlier this week. Australia is planning for 11 frigates to replace its aging ships.
                
Japan decided to contend for the contract after discussions based on its three principles for the transfer of defense equipment and technology.
                
Japan says the joint development and construction will greatly enhance interoperability between Japan&#039;s Self-Defense Forces and the Australian military. The program will also have extremely high significance for Japan&#039;s security.
                
Under the contract, Japan would proceed with joint development based on the Maritime Self-Defense Force&#039;s state-of-the-art Mogami-class frigate. Three of a newly developed model would be built in Japan, with the fourth and later vessels to be assembled in Australia.
                
Japan&#039;s Defense Ministry says the Mogami-class frigate is suitable for navigation in the open sea, but can be operated by a small number of crewmembers.
                
However, the ministry says the German frigate manufacturer has possible merits in terms of continuity, since it built Australia&#039;s current fleet.
                
Japan intends to ramp up efforts with its frigate maker to acquire the contract. The winner will be decided as early as the second half of 2025.
