OpenAI has released a new image-generation feature for its generative AI tool, ChatGPT, allowing paid subscribers to transform photos and other images into "Studio Ghibli style," resembling the look of anime films created by the Japanese studio of the same name. Since the feature's release on Tuesday, users have flooded the internet with images in that style. Some of them were based on a photo taken during the White House meeting last month between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that descended into an argument. Other users have converted their family photos or those of their pets into Studio Ghibli-style images. On Wednesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman joined in, changing the profile photo on his X account into a Studio Ghibli style image of himself. However, some social media users and media outlets in the United States have raised concern that OpenAI may have scraped the popular anime studio's copyrighted works without permission to train its image-generation tool. The same concern was raised in a lawsuit filed by eight US newspapers against OpenAI and its business partner Microsoft in April last year. The newspapers accused them of stealing millions of their copyrighted articles without permission or payment to train their generative AI chatbots.
