The United Nations has documented more than 1,600 human-rights violations against people detained by the Taliban administration in Afghanistan.
                
The findings are in a report released on Wednesday by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. It covers the period from January 2022 to July 2023. The Taliban took control of the country in August 2021.
                
The report says 466 of the violations involved torture and other forms of ill treatment while detainees were in custody. It notes incidents involving physical and mental pain, such as beatings, electric shocks, and threats to kill family members.
                
It also says 18 individuals died while in custody.
                
The UN is urging the Islamist group to take immediate action to eradicate torture, investigate perpetrators, and compensate victims.
                
A spokesperson for the Taliban&#039;s interim government has denied the accusations, claiming that torture and other violations are &quot;not permissible&quot; at any of the country&#039;s institutions. He described the report&#039;s findings as &quot;far from reality.&quot;
