The Australian government has condemned police in Hong Kong for issuing arrest warrants against eight pro-democracy activists living overseas.
                
Australia is home to two of the activists. The police say they face charges under Hong Kong&#039;s national security law. The legislation was designed to crack down on dissent.
                
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reacted sharply to the announcement on Wednesday. He said it is unacceptable.
                
He added, &quot;We&#039;ll continue to cooperate with China, where we can, but we will disagree, where we must. And we do disagree over human rights issues.&quot;
                
Ted Hui is a former Hong Kong legislator. Kevin Yam is a lawyer and Australian citizen. They are among the eight dissidents.
                
The men fled Hong Kong in 2019, after a series of pro-democracy protests took place in the Chinese territory. They have remained outspoken since then.
                
The police in Hong Kong are now offering rewards for information leading to their arrests.
                
Relations between Australia and China have been strained for years. Canberra has been gradually restoring government-to-government exchanges, since Albanese took office in 2022. But the countries remain at odds over issues, such as the South China Sea and human rights.
                
Concern is continuing to grow. The authorities in Hong Kong have been tightening their grip on free speech and human rights, since Beijing imposed the national security law in 2020.
                
The other activists targeted this week are based in Canada, the US, and the UK.
