People in Thailand are reeling from heavy monsoon rain. Collapsing river embankments have caused major flooding. Meteorological authorities are warning of more heavy rain over the coming week, and are urging people to brace for flash floods. Residential areas in the northern province of Sukhothai were submerged after a river embankment burst during heavy rainstorms over the weekend. Authorities say over 1,000 households have been affected. Officials and local residents used sandbags to contain overflowing water from the river. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Tuesday ordered national agencies to pay special attention to the affected areas and promised to accelerate drainage operations. Since massive floods in 2011, Thai authorities have tried to strengthen flood control projects.
