US House passes $1.7 trillion bill to fund government, aid Ukraine NHK

The US House of Representatives has passed a 1.7 trillion-dollar bill to fund the federal government for fiscal 2023 through September.

The bill passed the House by a majority vote on Friday, after the Senate approved it the previous day. It now goes to President Joe Biden to be signed into law.

The package includes a record 858 billion dollars in defense funding and 45 billion dollars in aid for Ukraine.

The legislation also bans the use of TikTok, a video-sharing app operated by a Chinese firm, on government devices, reflecting concerns about information leaks to the Chinese government through the platform.

The bill also includes a provision that clarifies that the vice president has no power to overturn the results of a presidential election.

The measure is intended to help prevent a recurrence of the violence in January last year, when supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol.
