The International Olympic Committee says athletes from Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to take part in the parade of the opening ceremony for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The IOC on Tuesday held an executive board meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, to discuss issues in the run-up to the Games. Russians and Belarusians will not be competing as representatives of their countries due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. They will instead be competing as individual neutral athletes, or AINs. The IOC decided that they "will not participate in the parade of delegations during the opening ceremony, since they are individual athletes." The opening ceremony is scheduled for July 26. The committee says it will make a decision on whether to allow those athletes to take part in the closing ceremony "at a later stage." The IOC also says a newly created flag and anthem will be used at medal ceremonies for AINs. Twelve Russian athletes and seven Belarusian athletes are currently qualified to compete in the Olympic Games as AINs.
