Senior military officials from India and Pakistan have held talks after the two neighbors agreed to a ceasefire brokered by the United States. Military clashes between the two countries erupted after India last Wednesday launched a missile attack on the Pakistani side, which New Delhi called retaliation for a terrorist attack. On Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced that India and Pakistan had agreed to an immediate ceasefire. The governments of the two Asian neighbors confirmed the agreement. During the talks on Monday, Indian and Pakistani military officials discussed issues surrounding the ceasefire agreement. The two sides reportedly agreed to consider taking steps to reduce the number of troops in border areas of the disputed Kashmir region and other areas. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday pledged that India will retaliate significantly if there is another armed attack or act of terror from Pakistan. In his first public speech since the ceasefire deal, Modi said India's military has killed more than 100 terrorists, and that the country will monitor Pakistan closely. A Pakistani military spokesperson said on Sunday that Pakistan will respond decisively whenever the country's sovereignty is threatened or its territorial integrity violated. It remains to be seen whether the truce will hold and pave the way for de-escalation.
