The governors of Tokyo and Bangkok have agreed to cooperate in addressing common challenges, including climate change-related disasters, which are impacting the Japanese and Thai capitals. Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko met with her Thai counterpart Chadchart Sittipunt in Bangkok on Thursday, the second day of her four-day visit to Thailand. After the meeting, the two governors signed a joint communique confirming cooperation in key areas, including measures to prepare for heavy rains and other natural disasters linked to global warming. The communique also says the two metropolises will work together to resolve the challenges of rapidly aging societies and low birthrates. The governors agreed to step up information-sharing on how to attract more travelers to their respective cities amid booming inbound tourism. After the signing, Koike said Tokyo wants to further develop ties with Bangkok and work together to resolve common problems so that people in the two capitals can appreciate the effects of the cooperation. For his part, the Bangkok governor said the document marks an important step in strengthening ties and fostering further collaboration. He said he hopes the cooperation will facilitate learning and enhance the exchange of experiences between the two cities.
