Israeli forces take control of southern areas infiltrated by Hamas militants NHK

Israeli forces say they have taken control of areas in the south of the country that had been infiltrated by members of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and others.

The Israeli military is continuing its heavy airstrikes against Hamas, which effectively controls the Gaza Strip, in retaliation for the group's massive cross-border attacks.

The military says at least 900 people have died on the Israeli side, with more than 2,700 wounded. It claims Hamas has taken more than 100 people hostage.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian media report that 770 people have been killed in the Israeli military offensive, with about 4,000 others wounded.

The combined death toll has topped 1,600.

An Israeli military spokesperson announced on Tuesday that the massive airstrikes on Gaza continue, and that areas infiltrated by Hamas fighters and others who crossed the border from Gaza have been placed under Israeli control.

The spokesperson said the military has totally destroyed the terrorist infrastructure, hitting thousands of targets and dropping hundreds of tons of bombs.

Israeli Energy Minister Israel Katz posted on social media on Tuesday that the power supply to Gaza will be cut off and people there will be unable to pump well water within a week.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, said on Monday that more than 187,000 people in Gaza have been displaced, and the number is likely to rise.

The office is stressing the urgent need for food and other supplies.

A spokesperson for Hamas' office in the Lebanese capital Beirut told NHK on Monday that the militant group had expected Israeli airstrikes and ground troop deployment, and is prepared.

The spokesperson warned of more surprises if Israel steps up its attacks on Gaza.
