Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen is scheduled to visit two Central American nations from next week on a trip that includes transits in the United States. A spokesperson for the presidential office told reporters on Tuesday that Tsai will leave on March 29. She is scheduled to transfer in New York before flying on to Guatemala and Belize. Both nations have diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Tsai will hold talks with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei and visit a hospital built with Taiwan's assistance. In Belize, she will meet Prime Minister John Briceno and deliver a speech at the national assembly. Tsai will then transfer in Los Angeles before arriving back in Taiwan on April 7. The presidential office has not disclosed details of an itinerary, but Britain's Financial Times newspaper says Tsai has agreed to meet US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters on Tuesday that China firmly opposes any official exchanges between the US and Taiwan, or any visit to the US by a Taiwanese leader. He added that Beijing had made solemn representations to the US. Honduras is not part of the trip, despite also having diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Last week, Honduran President Xiomara Castro revealed that she has instructed the foreign minister to start negotiations with China on establishing diplomatic ties.
