Former members of Japan's leading talent agency Johnny & Associates have called on the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party to better address sexual misconduct against children by revising the current law. Kauan Okamoto and Hashida Yasushi recently disclosed that they were sexually abused when they were teens by late agency founder Johnny Kitagawa. He died in 2019. The two visited the LDP headquarters in Tokyo on Monday to take part in a special committee meeting to address the issue of abuse. In view of possible sexual misconduct targeting children by senior members of talent agencies or those in charge of extracurricular school activities, the two called for the child abuse prevention law to be amended to require witnesses of such misconduct to inform police. They also requested elementary and junior high schools to inform their students of a counseling system they should contact in case they were subjected to sexual abuse. Special committee deputy secretary-general Miyazaki Masahisa later told reporters that the meeting made him fully aware that lawmakers must build a system that will protect children. He added that revising the child abuse prevention law will not be the only option; he hopes to create a system that will work comprehensively.
