Foreign ministers from NATO member states have affirmed they will speed up the provision of air defense systems and ammunition to Ukraine as Russia steps up its offensive. The foreign ministers wrapped up their two-day meeting on Wednesday at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Speaking at a news conference, Secretary General Mark Rutte noted that the increasing alignment of Russia, China, North Korea and Iran highlights the global nature of existing threats, including the escalating dangers of the ongoing war in Ukraine. He added: "We must do more than just keep Ukraine in the fight. We must provide enough support to change the trajectory of this conflict once and for all." But the ministers reportedly saw no progress on starting formal procedures for NATO membership for Ukraine. NATO member states have agreed to raise their defense spending to two percent of GDP. However, Rutte said two percent is "simply not enough" and must be increased to keep NATO's longer-term deterrence at the current level. His remarks come as US President-elect Donald Trump has been pushing European nations to shoulder more of the cost of the alliance.
