Many members of the UN Human Rights Council are calling on Japan to abolish the death penalty and improve medical care at immigration facilities.

The council conducts a periodic review of member states and issues non-legally binding recommendations.

This week, Japan was subject to a review for the first time in six years.

The report contains 300 recommendations from more than 100 countries.

Many members call on Japan to abolish the death penalty and establish an independent human rights relief organization in line with international standards.

They also urge Japan to improve health care systems at immigration facilities where foreign nationals are detained.

And they advise the country to avoid prolonged detentions.

Western member nations are calling on Japan to end discrimination against sexual minorities, legalize same-sex marriage, and promote women's participation in politics and business.

Tokyo is expected to report back to the Human Rights Council on the recommendations by June.
