The Japan Meteorological Agency says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 has hit waters just off the northeastern prefecture of Fukushima. There is no threat of tsunami. The agency says the quake struck at around 0:14 a.m. on Friday, with its focus estimated to be 50 kilometers deep. It says the towns of Kawamata and Naraha, both in the prefecture, registered tremors with an intensity of lower 5 on Japan's scale of zero to 7. The agency says this is the first time since October 21, 2022, that jolts with an intensity of at least lower 5 have shaken parts of Fukushima Prefecture. The agency says Friday's quake also sent tremors with an intensity of 4 to the cities of Fukushima, Koriyama, Iwaki and many other areas in Fukushima, Miyagi, Tochigi and Ibaraki prefectures. Japan's nuclear regulator says no problems have been found with the reactors at Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini plants and nuclear reactors in Miyagi and Ibaraki prefectures following the earthquake.
