People across Japan are waiting for the first total lunar eclipse in about three years.
In a lunar eclipse, the sun, Earth, and moon all align, resulting in the moon being covered by the Earth's shadow.
The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan says the phenomenon will begin at around 1:27 a.m., Japan time, on Monday, when the moon in the southwestern sky starts to darken.
It adds that the full eclipse will occur at around 2:30 a.m. The moon will glow dark red as sunlight is bent through the Earth's atmosphere.
The observatory says the total eclipse will last for about 80 minutes until around 3:53 a.m. The full moon will be visible again at around 4:57 a.m.
Japan experienced its last total lunar eclipse in November 2022.
If skies are clear, the phenomenon will be visible across the country.
Distinguished Professor Watanabe Junichi of the National Astronomical Observatory recommends choosing an open area with a clear view to the southwest for the best chance of seeing the total eclipse.
