Report: China's nuclear arsenal growing significantly NHK

A new report estimates China's nuclear arsenal has grown by 60 warheads -- the largest year-on-year increase in the world.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute released its findings on Monday. It says there were about 12,500 warheads globally in January, down 198 from a year earlier.

The report says China's inventory reached 410 that month as part of a significant expansion. It says it's hard to see how this fits with Beijing's declared aim of having only the minimum nuclear forces needed to maintain national security.

The report says North Korea possesses 30 warheads, up five from last year.
Russia tops the list at 5,889, followed by the US with about 650 fewer. The two hold about 90 percent of the world's total.
