Newly promoted Yokozuna Hoshoryu has lost his first bout in the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in Osaka.



This is the first time in 30 years that a new grand champion has suffered a loss on the opening day of a tournament.



Hoshoryu faced Abi in the last bout on Sunday. Abi, who holds the fourth-highest rank of komusubi, had defeated Hoshoryu in their previous two matches.



Hoshoryu was lifted up by Abi's double-handed thrust and quickly thrust out of the ring.



Hoshoryu is currently the only yokozuna. He was promoted to the highest rank after winning his second title in the January tourney.
