Newly promoted Yokozuna Hoshoryu has lost his first bout in the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in Osaka. This is the first time in 30 years that a new grand champion has suffered a loss on the opening day of a tournament. Hoshoryu faced Abi in the last bout on Sunday. Abi, who holds the fourth-highest rank of komusubi, had defeated Hoshoryu in their previous two matches. Hoshoryu was lifted up by Abi's double-handed thrust and quickly thrust out of the ring.
