Taiwan's ruling party names Lai as presidential candidate NHK

Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party has officially named Vice President Lai Ching-te as its candidate for the 2024 presidential election.

Lai, who is also the DPP chairperson, issued a statement at the party's headquarters in Taipei on Wednesday.

In the statement he said, "In reality, Taiwan is already a sovereign, independent country, and does not need to otherwise declare independence."

He said opinion polls show that a majority of people are opposed to unification and reject the "one-China" policy and the "one country, two systems" framework.

He also said that, based on facts and mainstream public opinion, there is no question of unification and independence in Taiwan's society.

He added that the 2024 election will be a choice between "democracy and autocracy," not "war and peace."

Lai called on people to choose democracy to strengthen it, unite Taiwan and reject going back to the old path of autocratic rule.

He apparently dismissed concerns that a victory by the DPP would lead to an armed conflict with China. He also apparently criticized the largest opposition party, the Kuomintang, which used to exercise one-party rule, and called for continued DPP rule.

Lai also said Taiwan must continue to strengthen its defense capabilities. But he indicated that he wants to have exchange with China on an equal footing with dignity and facilitate a reconciliation.
