Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has pledged to step up efforts to hold a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in order to bring back all Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea. Speaking at a rally organized by victims' relatives on Saturday in Tokyo, Kishida said the abduction issue is an urgent humanitarian matter with a narrow window of time, as many of the relatives are advanced in age. He said the government will do all it can to bring the victims home as soon as possible. Kishida stressed the need for a drastic change to the situation. He added it's important for top leaders to form a relationship that enables them to speak frankly to tackle difficult issues. He said he is determined to meet Kim anytime without conditions. The prime minister also said he will step up efforts through various channels to advance high-level talks under his direct command to realize a summit. He added that he wants to urge the North Korean leader to see the big picture, overcome obstacles and make decisions together.
