Petitions issued to dissolve Thailand's largest opposition party NHK

A former lawmaker and a lawyer in Thailand are calling for the dissolution of the country's largest opposition party.

The Move Forward Party pledged during last year's general election to amend a law that makes it illegal to insult the country's royal family.

But Thailand's Constitutional Court on Wednesday ruled that the basis of the pledge is unconstitutional.

Following the decision, a former lawmaker and a lawyer submitted petitions Thursday to the election commission calling for the dissolution of the Move Forward Party.

They say the Constitutional Court ruled that the party's policies are aimed at overthrowing the monarchy, and that the decision amounts to a reason to dissolve the party.
The court has previously ordered several other parties in Thailand to be dissolved.
