Major League Baseball two-way superstar Ohtani Shohei has expressed his firm resolve to aim for victory in the World Series.
Ohtani spoke at a news conference on Thursday at Dodger Stadium after signing a record-breaking 10-year, 700-million-dollar contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Surrounded by more than 50 TV cameras and over 400 media and baseball personnel, Ohtani put on a Dodgers jersey with the No.17.
He said he is thrilled to join the time-honored team with a clear vision for victory.
Before fielding questions from reporters, he stood before the cameras with Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts, the team's president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman, and interpreter Mizuhara Ippei.
Ohtani said his top priority is to win the World Series. He vowed to go all out to be regarded as indispensable in helping his team to win the title.
Asked why he chose the Dodgers over other competitors, Ohtani said he made the decision the night before. He said he just followed his desire although there was more than one reason behind his decision.
Asked about the condition of his injured right elbow, he said he has already begun dry swinging and expressed confidence that he will be fully ready as a batter in time for the opening game against the San Diego Padres in South Korea next March.
He revealed that he calls his pet dog "Dekopin," which means a finger flick to the forehead in Japanese.
He added that "Dekopin" is probably too difficult to pronounce for English speakers, so he uses the American name "Decoy." The dog drew attention when Ohtani gave an interview from his home after being named this year's Most Valuable Player in the American League.
