Japan's opposition CDP reshuffles leadership NHK

The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, the country's largest opposition party, has reshuffled its leadership. The party's president, Noda Yoshihiko, said the move was based on a determination to take power.

Veteran Lower House member Azumi Jun, who served as the chair of the Lower House Budget Committee, has been appointed as the party's secretary-general.

Three Lower House members, each of whom is serving a second term in the chamber, were chosen to the leadership.

Honjo Satoshi was appointed as Policy Research Committee chairperson. Yoshida Harumi became one of the party's executive deputy presidents, and Watanabe So was appointed as chairperson of Public Relations Committee, which was newly established to a standing committee.

Noda said he was mindful of striking a balance between stability and reform in the leadership reshuffle.

Some in the party said the new leadership reflects a broad range of talent that could lead to party unity, while others question whether younger members are fit for the job.

Noda has hinted at consulting with other opposition parties about the selection of the next prime minister in the Diet after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party chooses its new head.

Attention is focused on whether the opposition camp can coordinate on the matter.
