A Japanese animation film creator has become one of the winners of this year's Student Academy Awards. The Student Academy Awards is an international film competition. Contestants are judged by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization that hosts the Oscars. The winners of the 51st event were announced in London on Monday. Kanamori Kei's "Origami" won the second-place silver prize in the animation category. "Origami" uses computer graphics to show a square piece of paper folded into various living creatures, as if life is sprouting from the earth. Kanamori created it as his graduation project while attending Tokyo's Digital Hollywood University. The university says Kanamori is the first graduate of a Japanese film school to win the award. Kanamori said he is very happy that his work, which centers on the Japanese cultural practice of origami, was recognized by the Academy. He expressed hope that this will encourage students who are working hard on their own creations. "Origami" will be eligible for consideration for the Oscars next year in the United States.
