Japanese life insurer Meiji Yasuda has decided to raise annual salaries by 5 percent on average beginning in April. The move comes amid intensifying competition to secure workers. The increase for the coming fiscal year will cover about 47,000 domestic employees at one of the country's largest life insurance companies. The plan will be completed after discussions with the labor union. Younger employees who have been with the firm for five years or less will get 8 percent pay hikes under the plan. The life insurer is also raising starting pay for university graduates. New recruits joining from April will receive as much as 332,000 yen, about 2,100 dollars, monthly. Major Japanese homebuilder Daiwa House Industry says it will push up annual pay of its 16,000 regular employees by 10 percent on average from April. The company will also increase starting monthly compensation for new recruits. Wages for university graduates will go up by 40 percent to 350,000 yen, or about 2,200 dollars.
