G7 leaders to issue joint declaration of support for Ukraine NHK

The Group of Seven leaders are expected to declare that they will negotiate with Ukraine to formalize their enduring support to help the country defend itself.

The G7 leaders will meet on Wednesday following the NATO summit in Lithuania. They are expected to issue a joint declaration of support for Ukraine.

The draft declaration says each of the G7 nations will work with Ukraine on long-term security commitments and arrangements.

It says the measures are aimed at ensuring a sustainable force capable of defending Ukraine now and deterring Russian aggression in the future.

The draft states provision of modern military equipment prioritizing air defense, artillery and long-range fires, armored vehicles and other key capabilities, such as combat aircraft.

The countries also plan to offer support to further develop Ukraine's defense industrial base, train Ukrainian forces and share intelligence.

In the event of future Russian armed attack, the G7 countries say, they intend to immediately consult with Ukraine to determine appropriate next steps.

They also say they recognize the need for the establishment of an international mechanism for reparation of damages caused by Russia's invasion. They add that they are ready to explore options for the development of appropriate mechanisms.
