Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has expressed his intention to make preparations to implement generative artificial intelligence in the manufacturing sector, saying it could help improve labor productivity. Kishida made the comment on Tuesday in a meeting of a government council to realize his economic policy of a "new form of capitalism." The participants discussed scientific technologies and innovations. Referring to his recent meeting with Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT, Kishida said they discussed privacy and copyrights, as well as the need to set up international rules. Kishida said the use of generative AI technologies including ChatGPT could help deal with labor shortages and improve productivity. He expressed his intention to lay the groundwork for the use of the technology by identifying any issues and promoting its development. Kishida also said promoting growth of the green and digital industries will require companies to withdraw smoothly from unprofitable businesses. He plans to set up systems in which companies can consult experts on how to close businesses and to work on legislation to allow debt reductions for businesses that are restructuring.
