Video footage shows how things played out at the scene of Saturday's explosion in Wakayama City, western Japan.
At around 11:20 a.m., Prime Minister Kishida Fumio arrived at Saikazaki Port. He was then seen sampling some locally-caught fish.
A large crowd of people had gathered near the port where Kishida was due to give a speech. Among them was the man thought to be the suspect who was later apprehended.
At around 11:27 a.m., as Kishida was about to address the crowd, a dull thud apparently caused by something hitting the ground was heard. Kishida, who had his back toward the audience, reacted by looking down at his feet.
Immediately, a roar rose from the crowd, followed by screams. The suspect was wrestled to the ground by people standing nearby.
He was seen holding a silver, cylindrical object and moving his hands as if to ignite a lighter.
The man looked young and was wearing glasses and a face mask and was carrying a gray rucksack on his back when apprehended.
About 50 seconds after he was caught, a loud explosion was heard accompanied by white smoke from near where Kishida had been standing.
People started to flee the scene, prompted by calls to leave the site.
The suspect was taken to a local police station in a police car.
