Massive protests have erupted in India over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in West Bengal state earlier this month. Protesters have clashed with police, demanding justice for her and protection from violence for all women. On Tuesday, police blocked roads in the state capital Kolkata, firing tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters. The body of a 31-year-old trainee doctor was found in a Kolkata hospital on August 9. She was believed to have been taking a rest during her shift when she was assaulted. An autopsy later confirmed rape, and a 33-year-old man was arrested by police on suspicion of murder and sexual assault. Anger mounted as it was revealed that the suspect was a police volunteer and the state government mishandled investigations. The outrage spread nationwide, prompting women and medical workers in cities, including the capital New Delhi, to take to the streets. Their demands include protecting women and ensuring a safe work environment for medical workers. India ramped up penalties against sexual assault after a woman was raped and assaulted inside a bus in 2012, with her death days later setting off national outrage. But sexual violence against women remains a major issue, with widespread calls for stronger crackdowns.
