An Irish chef in Japan's western prefecture of Shimane has attempted to set a new world record for the longest continuous baking session. Alan Fisher, who owns a restaurant in the city of Matsue, continued to bake Irish soda bread for 48 hours from 9 a.m. on Monday without sleep. That was more than 16 hours longer than the current marathon baking record of 31 hours and 16 minutes. Fisher celebrated with Irish beer amid applause and drumming by his supporters. During the attempt, Fisher baked 487 pieces of the traditional bread, which were given away free to customers after volunteers took photos for the record. It is expected to take at least one week for the Guinness World Records organization to decide whether to recognize his time as the new record. Fisher said his back started to ache from standing continuously while baking. But he said he achieved what he did thanks to the support of many patrons.
