Snowstorms forecast for northern Japan through Monday NHK

Japan's meteorological agency is calling on people in northern parts of the country to watch out for heavy snow and snowstorms through Monday.

Weather officials say cold air is flowing into Japan, bringing heavy snow to Hokkaido and Japan Sea side of the Honshu main island.

They say up to one meter of snow is expected in Niigata Prefecture over the 24 hours through Monday morning. Another 80 centimeters could fall through Tuesday morning.

Officials expect strong winds of more than 80 kilometers per hour in the prefecture, as well as in western Japan, on Sunday.

They are calling on people along the Japan Sea coast to be alert for snowstorms, high waves and avalanches. Bad weather could disrupt public transport and cause blackouts. Drivers are advised to beware of slippery roads.
