People across Japan will soon be facing another price hike, with mail fees in the country set to rise for the first time in 30 years. Japan Post submitted the plan for the increase to the communications ministry on Thursday. Starting from October, postage for standard-size items will go up to 110 yen, or around 70 cents. The cost of postcards will rise more than 30 percent in yen terms to just over 50 cents. Express mail will get about a 15 percent increase. Japan Post says it is dealing with declining use and rising transportation costs. Its mail business fell into the red in fiscal 2022 for the first time since its privatization in 2007. The communications ministry says the planned price hikes will bring it into the black in fiscal 2025, but it adds that it will move back into a deficit the following year. The company says it will further improve business efficiency.
