Hardline US Republican files to vacate McCarthy as House speaker NHK

A hardline US Republican has filed a motion to remove fellow party member, Kevin McCarthy, as the speaker of the House of Representatives.

Republican Representative, Matt Gaetz, on Monday moved to trigger a vote on whether McCarthy should remain in the post.

This comes after bipartisan members of the US Congress approved a revised spending bill and averted a government shutdown at the last minute on Saturday.

The stopgap funding measures allow the federal government to run through mid-November.

Gaetz expressed discontent about the stopgap funding which does not include sharp spending cuts demanded by hardline Republicans.

He has been strongly critical of McCarthy who chose to work with Democrats for the passage of the bill.

McCarthy reacted to the move in a social media post, saying, "Bring it on."

It is uncertain whether McCarthy will be removed from the speakership as majority support from House members is needed to dismiss its speaker.

The Republican Party narrowly controls the House. Many Republican lawmakers support McCarthy. But moves among Democrats could affect the result.

The administration of President Joe Biden is urging Congress to quickly approve funding bills that include aid for Ukraine for the entire new fiscal year.

But an escalation in the internal rifts among Republicans could affect deliberations on the bills.
