Russia's defense ministry says the country's air defenses stopped eight drones attempting to attack Moscow and its suburbs on Tuesday. The minister of defense, Sergei Shoigu, blamed Ukraine for the attacks.
The ministry said later that day that it had intercepted all of the drones, either shooting them down or jamming their systems to divert them off course.
But Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote in a social media post that two buildings were damaged. He said no one was seriously wounded in the attacks, but two people sustained minor injuries and were treated on the spot.
The attacks reportedly caused damage to high-rise apartment buildings in southwestern Moscow.
A woman residing on the 18th floor of one of the buildings said she was told by a security guard to evacuate as drones were flying overhead. She said she did not hear any crashing sounds as she was asleep, but that when she went out, she saw the 14th floor windows shattered and fragments of drones scattered on the ground.
Defense minister Shoigu said in a meeting on Tuesday that Ukraine carried out what he called a "terrorist attack" in the Moscow region. But he has not supplied evidence to support the claim.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said President Vladimir Putin had been briefed about the drone attacks from the defense ministry and other parties.
Peskov indicated that the attacks were attempts by Ukraine to retaliate against the intense raids carried out by Russian forces in Kyiv and elsewhere.
Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, denied his country's involvement in the drone attacks to local media.
