Japan&#039;s Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and their daughter, Princess Aiko, have paid tribute to the war dead at the Nagasaki Peace Park.
        
                    
                  
The family arrived in the city on Friday for a three-day visit. At the Peace Park, they bowed and offered flowers at a cenotaph marking the hypocenter of the 1945 atomic bombing. A register of more than 200,000 victims is kept inside the monument.
        
                    
                  
The Imperial family then visited the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. They viewed a diorama of how the blast and intense heat rays spread across the city after the atomic bomb was detonated.
        
                    
                  
The family later met four atomic bomb survivors, known as hibakusha, and two young people who relate the stories of the bombing on behalf of the aging survivors.
        
                    
                  
Emperor Naruhito was heard giving words of consolation to Tanaka Shigemitsu, who explained how he was exposed to radiation at age four. Tanaka is a co-chair of Nihon Hidankyo, an organization representing hibakusha. The group was honored with last year&#039;s Nobel Peace Prize.
        
                    
                  
The Imperial couple and Princess Aiko listened intently as 101-year-old survivor Nakamura Kikuyo recounted the loss of her relatives.
        
                    
                  
Empress Masako commented that the experience must have been harsh, and wished good health to Nakamura.
        
                    
                  
The family is due to visit a nursing care home for the hibakusha on Saturday. On Sunday, the Emperor and Empress will attend the opening ceremony of the National Cultural Festival and the National Arts and Culture Festival for Persons with Disabilities.
        
                    
                  
The Imperial Household Agency says this is the couple&#039;s first visit to Nagasaki since the Emperor ascended the throne, and the first ever for Princess Aiko.
        
                    
                  
This year, the Emperor and Empress have been marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two by visiting symbolic sites from the war.
