India, Philippines congratulate Trump on election win NHK

Leaders in the Asia-Pacific have reacted to Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Trump to congratulate him.

Modi posted on social media that he told Trump he looks forward to working together again to strengthen bilateral relations. He also posted pictures from Trump's previous presidency.

India has been stepping up defense cooperation with the US, including through the joint production of fighter jet engines in the country. The moves appear to be meant to counter Beijing.

But with China being India's largest trading partner, Modi will likely refrain from making provocative moves as he assesses the incoming US administration.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also reacted quickly to Trump's victory. He released a statement expressing hope that their alliance will lead to prosperity and amity on both sides of the Pacific.

Marcos has been shifting toward closer defense cooperation with the Biden administration, apparently with China in mind. He granted the US access to additional Philippine military bases last year.

Manila and Beijing have grown increasingly at odds in the South China Sea as China's activities become more assertive in the region.
