'Crayon Shinchan' statue unveiled at Aso City, southwestern Japan NHK

A statue of the main character of Japan's popular anime series "Crayon Shinchan" has been unveiled in front of children in the southwestern prefecture of Kumamoto.

The event took place at a gymnasium in Aso City on Saturday.

The series is set in Saitama Prefecture. The main character Shinnosuke's parents come from Kumamoto and Akita prefectures. The three prefectures have a "family city agreement," which led to the statue's creation.

At the event, Aso Mayor Matsushima Kazuko said officials will promote the city as a second hometown of Shinchan.

Local nursery school children then pulled strings to unveil the statue.

The figure is about 90 centimeters tall and wears headgear featuring Kumamon, a popular local mascot.

After the ceremony, many children and their parents took photos alongside the figure.

The statue will be placed at the Aso Volcano Museum for the time being, and then it will also be shown at various tourist facilities in the city.
