Israel&#039;s former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been asked to form a new government, paving the way for his return to power after one-and-a-half years.
                
Israel&#039;s President Isaac Herzog gave Netanyahu the official mandate on Sunday.
                
Netanyahu&#039;s right-wing Likud Party and far-right and religious parties secured a majority in parliament in the fifth national election in three-and-a-half years on November 1.
                
They have already started talks on forming a coalition government.
                
Netanyahu said during a news conference that he will be the prime minister for everyone -- for those who voted for him and those who did not.
                
It would be the third time for Netanyahu to serve as Israel&#039;s prime minister. He previously took office in 1996 and in 2009.
                
Observers say his coalition could be Israel&#039;s most hardline government ever. His coalition partners include a party calling for the expulsion of Palestinians.
