Tokyo police have released a drama based on real-life spy incidents to urge Japanese businesses to improve their security measures. The video is aimed at preventing outflows of advanced technology and protecting Japan's economic security. It depicts ways in which spies target businesses using a variety of tactics to obtain state-of-the-art technologies. The approximately 30-minute video was posted on the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's official website and social media on Wednesday. The story follows a spy from a foreign intelligence agency who contacts an employee of a Japanese startup that develops autonomous driving technologies. The spy wines and dines the employee, deepens their relationship, offers gifts and money and eventually demands the provision of confidential corporate data. In a warning to corporate executives, the drama also shows another intelligence official approaching a Japanese company about a joint project with a foreign firm. The deal requires a huge financial investment from the Japanese corporation. Tokyo police have visited a total of 2,500 businesses in the past year for what it calls "outreach activities" to promote tighter security measures. They say they will use the new drama to aid such efforts.
